In a hurry? Go right to the pictures

I know some people consider this a pretty stupid movie, and I suppose it is, but I like it anyway.

It's just plain fun. The three leads are each masters of their schtick, the gags are good-natured and the songs by Randy Newman are really catchy. Maybe too catchy - I sometimes get to singing them over and over which, you can imagine, makes me very popular with the husband.

You don't get analytical or philosophical with this movie, I think, so I'll just list the bits that are still my favorites after all these years:

  • Anything Marty Short does. Period. I think he's adorable.
  • The signature mannerisms of these three great comics: Marty Short's hips-all-over-the-place dancing, Chevy Chase's sarcastic and expressive eyes, Steve Martin's perfect belief in whatever absurd situation he finds himself, the nonsense they each spew to summon the Invisible Swordsman.
  • Randy Newman's songs!
  • Alfonso Arau as El Guapo - I liked him in Romancing the Stone  as well.
  • The "My Little Buttercup" dance that Martin Short and Steve Martin do.
  • Little Neddy (Martin Short) regaling the peasant children with a story about Dorothy Gish.
  • Conversational exchanges between El Guapo (Alfonso Arau) and Jefe (Tony Plana).
  • Martin Short's face when he gets the faceful of dirt drinking from his canteen and then his reaction to Dusty's offer of lip balm.
  • Dusty's (Chase) puzzled response to the Playboy centerfold that materializes at the end of the movie to kiss Ned goodbye.

Sounds from Three Amigos

"My Little Buttercup" - The entire song - approximately two minutes.
"Well, you slime eating dogs..." - Savage insults from Lucky Day.
"I like these guys..."  - El Guapo meets the Amigos for the first time.
"Oh great! Real bullets..."  - What a bunch of amateurs!
"Blue Shadows on the Trail" - The entire song - approximately two and a half minutes.
"What is happening around here..." - El Guapos hideout is teeming with gringos.
"Now - what is it that this town really does well?"  - The Amigos help the villagers to fight off El Guapo using their own skills.
